The first news about the origins of the Bardigiano horse are 1864, year in which, from a certain historical source, mention is made of a "variety of horses", sufficiently homogeneous, which extended from the Apennines of Emilia, the Western until the Lunigiana.
The presence of the horse in the Val Ceno is still interesting, as an excerpt from the description of Bardi in the early ‘600 at the time of Federico II Landi. In this description, is, in fact, quoted from a horse of the local breed very estimated. Maria Landi, sister of Frederick the bride in the 1595 Ercole Grimaldi, and his son Onorato will become the first prince of Monaco. It seems plausible that the splendid horse, ridden by thirteen-year-old prince Ercole II Grimaldi, great-grandson of Federico Landi, depicted in a painting of the mid-SEVENTEENTH century (Munich, The palace of the Prince) for its characteristics, could represent an ancestor of the breed Bardigiana.
According to other sources, the origins could involve Belgian horses and in particular for some the origin would be linked to the famous Cremonese variety horses. Are documented over the years, further action of stallions haflinger horses, Franches Montaigne, Murgese and Croats that have in varying degrees influenced the breed.

This operation represented for the territory of the province is a great achievement that ranks among the first tasks of preservation of livestock biodiversity at national.
The Bardigiano horse has suffered over the years various events that represented a reaction of the breed, and breeders, to the changing farming conditions.
We must in fact consider that this little horse, born to help humans in the harsh mountain territory, lost with the years, the dynamic use for the soma, and the small agricultural works and in the first phase, was used extensively for the production of horsemeat.
This phase of use of the breed had a short life and currently all the efforts of the breeders are aimed at making the Bardigiano horse a modern breed for equestrian sports..
