Strong branch of an ancient stump. The Fontani family has deep roots and Duccio fully represents it today. Love for the land, that Chianti of which he has imprinted every scent and shade of color in his mind, guided his every choice of life. His, convinced champion of a simple and sober “modus vivendi”, is a concentrate of passion that has been alive for generations. Generations of sharecroppers with their hearts anchored in the Tuscan hills since the 16th century. Duccio protects and takes care of some hectares of land in Tregole, frazioncina three kilometers from Castellina (Siena). He wanted to be a farmer since he was a boy, just like his ancestors. The memory of grandfather Guido is still alive, called il Morino, born in Case a Frassi, lived surrounded by the respect of those who knew him.
"I left university attracted to work as a farmer in the 1970s - explains Duccio -. I started out as an agricultural worker. Then I became a sharecropper. I learned a lot from work colleagues ".
From 1984 works on the recovery of old uncultivated fields where the vegetation grows spontaneously. The owner was an old Dutchman who was studying the revegetation of abandoned lands. Duccio had at the beginning of the adventure 30 Years. Today it has 67 and the land he took such great care of was given to him. With the support of seven dwarf donkeys, keeps in custody - also cultivating it - the native wild vegetation and obtains dried herbs - the drying takes place strictly with natural ventilation - and spices that give off the fragrant essence of Chianti.

You can find everything in the production of Duccio Fontani: thyme, rosemary, sage, savory, oregano and also cilantro, mustard, fenugreek. And then, naturally, parsley, celery, basil, chili pepper, garlic, onions, further. But there are also saffron and wild fennel, which arise spontaneously in the Castellina wood. There are no intermediaries between the producer and the sale. It is Duccio who takes care of the land, that makes the harvest (sometimes with the help of a few friends), who goes to the markets to sell products dried in the sun. On the colorful cart loaded with delights, infinite suggestions for flavoring the simplest dishes. In the era of intensive agriculture, its aromatic herb grows without supports and fertilizers in total freedom in the fields of the company. A more unique than rare example.
