These valleys of ours house one of the most delicious and excellent products in Europe, the "Borgotaro mushroom PGI", that is the first PGI to be recognized in Italy and currently the only fungus with a quality mark in all of Europe. The goodness of the Borgotaro porcino has been known for centuries, at least since 700, as demonstrated by a document by Alberto Cassio, and at the end of the 19th century, his fame reaches overseas, "Exported" by many emigrants from our valleys.
Its name is attested in some historical documents; the toponym is "Borgotaro", which is not "Borgo Val di Taro", country name; probably Borgotaro has a wider significance, of area, without a specific reference to the capital of Valtar. Also in Borgo Val di Taro it existed, from the very end 800, the weekly mushroom market: men and women came down from the neighboring mountains with white pillowcases full of dried porcini mushrooms to go to "Porta Portello", for the sale of fungi. The making of the railway (inaugurated in 1894) gave a significant boost to the export of porcini, consecrating Borgotaro as the commercial center of the mushroom market of our valleys. The Consortium was born in 1995 with the intention of protecting, promote and enhance the product and the territory. The fame of the Borgotaro Mushroom is not only at a culinary level but is also linked to the passion of thousands of seekers from all over Italy who frequent the woods of the area in the months of September and October and who live the experience and the emotion of the collection. To cope with an indiscriminate invasion of the woods (resulting in the destruction of the fungus-plant ecosystem) the Comunalias since the 1960s, which represent the major wooded properties with a fungal vocation of the area, have set up special reserves for mushroom picking.
Porcino of borgotaro
Porcino di Borgotaro PGI is considered superior for organoleptic qualities, olfactory and aromatic, compared to others from different areas both in Italy and abroad; the product is represented by the carpophore (namely the fruit) of four species of Boletus (B. eat, B. summer, B. pinophilus e B. air) fresh and dried, collected in the woods within a delimited area that includes the territories of the municipalities of Albareto, Bedonia, Berceto, Borgo Val di Taro, Compiano and Tornolo (in the province of Parma) and Pontremoli and Zeri (in the province of Massa Carrara). In the fresh state, the PGI Mushroom is placed on the market in "large" wooden packages (50 x 30 cm, which contain approx 3 kg of product) or "small" (25 x 30 cm); the contents are closed with a net and sealed, to prevent tampering with the product. In the dried state, the PGI Mushroom is placed on the market in sealed packages of 20, 50, 100 and 200 gr, of the best commercial qualities required by law, or "Extra", "Special" and "Commercial". it is a safe product from the point of view of quality and authenticity; In fact, to be able to boast the brand, must meet all the requirements necessary for certification, requirements that are verified by a third party and officially charged with carrying out the checks.
